What If I Eventually Need a Nursing Home?

Let's be honest. There are two types of nursing homes. Skipping past the professional jargon, there are places you want to go, and the places you really, really don't want to go.

Those places you really don't want to go to are almost always the low-cost state option. Good-hearted people work there, and lovely folks live there, but you've heard the horror stories. We don't need to go into them.

Personally, I've had two women in my life live in a nursing home. Each time, it took a few tries to get it right, as our family found the care to be unsatisfactory in multiple facilities. Imagine our family's horror when one day, our Alzheimer's suffering matriarch wandered off.

The good news

The good news is that doesn't have to be you. You don't have to wind up in one of those places where your family shakes their head or doesn't want to visit because of the smell.

And, the kicker is Medicare/Medicaid can take your home and all of your assets as payment for the care.

You don't need to be a millionaire to avoid those places, either. All it takes is a little pre-planning and a little forethought. Would you prefer your front porch or a bed in a nursing home? What if you could stay home to receive extra care but not burden your family and friends? It's an awful thought, but most of our clients want to stay at home as long as possible, but don't want to be a burden. How would you feel if you had to go to one of those homes because that is all Medicare/Medicaid will pay for? You could try to stay home as long as possible, but who will help with food, toileting, and dressing? Those are real and often unspoken concerns. You certainly don't want your kids to quit their jobs to do it.

Fortunately, we can help. This is one of our specialties; we can create home care plans for our clients, which allow you to stay home as your recuperate or even need regular care for the rest of your life.

Medicare pays for some care, as long as you're getting better. But what if you're not getting better? Plans start as low as $47 per month and even offer rebates for prescriptions. Imagine paying $0 after rebates for the chance to stay at home for the rest of your life.

I promise you, your front porch, your favorite chair, and having pictures of the grandkids on the refrigerator are worth it. We'll have a coffee. We'll talk about what is important, and swap pictures of the grandchildren. We'll also make sure you are in a better spot when we're done.
