Osteoporosis can mean serious, long-term health effects for seniors. It weakens the bones to the point that they can break. It can even result in death.
Whether you have osteoporosis can be determined by Bone Mineral Density (BMD), a measure to determine bone weakness. In the United States, an estimated 10 million people aged 50 years or older have osteoporosis. Most of these people are women (Osteoporosis workgroup).
Osteoporosis is called a silent disease because a person may not even know it's there until a facture occurs.
Osteoporosis is not considered curable. However, you can take medication to help treat the disease.
Exercise is recommended by experts. Walking, dancing, running, and resistance exercise, such as lifting weights can help you improve and maintain your BMD.
Medicare will cover BMD testing once every 24 months.
You might want to consider a tax-deferred annuity. A deferred annuity allows you to save money for retirement. You make contributions to the annuity, and the money grows tax deferred. So, you don't have to pay income taxes on the growth until you withdraw the money from the account.
You hear a lot these days about generations living under one roof, whether by choice or necessity.
But that doesn't mean there aren't many seniors living alone.
Nearly one-third of all seniors live by themselves, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. That's close to 14 million seniors aging alone (A Place for Mom).
