Your retirement is a time for fun and relaxation. But there can be more to it than that.

Finding meaning in retirement can mean going beyond what is "normal" everyday retirement life.

It can involve contributing to the broader community, servicing society, or taking care of others.

It can even include adopting a pet, volunteering, or babysitting your grandchildren.

These are all ways to fulfill human needs and connect with others and it can be good for your health!

What is a Generation?

There are different ideas of what constitutes a generation...

One useful description might be it's simply all of the people born and living at about the same time.

Key contemporary generations include Baby Boomers "I" (older Baby Boomers), Baby Boomers "II" (Younger Baby Boomers), and GI (World War II) or the "Greatest" generation.

Reports say the average period for a generation is about 20-30 years.

How Can Seniors Stay Active Despite Summer Heat?

Some tips (Senior Helpers):

Walk outside on cooler days.
Visit a senior center or the "Y".
Join a pool.
Give yoga a try.
Work out with a friend.
Stay hydrated.
Take extra breaks when you're exercising.
Wear sunscreen.

Dermatologists recommend using a sunscreen with an "SPF" of at least 30.

Good Taste, Good Health

Chicken Enchilada Casserole

Here's a simple, but pleasing, summertime treat. Serve with corn on the cob or corn salad.

INGREDIENTS:

8 small (corn or flour) tortillas, cut into halves
2 cooked and shredded chicken breasts
2 cups shredded Monterey Jack cheese
1 15-oz can pinto beans, rinsed and drained
2 cups red enchilada sauce
Optional garnishes: olives, sour cream, cilantro, avocado, tomato, green or red onions.

DIRECTIONS:

Preheat the oven to 350°. With cooking spray, coat 8" or 9" square baking pan or casserole.
Spread 1/4 cups sauce over prepared dish. Cover the sauce at the bottom of pan with 4 halves of the tortilla.
On the tortillas, spread 1/3 of the chicken, 1/3 of the beans, 1/2 cup of cheese.
Starting with another 1/3 cup of enchilada sauce, repeat layer twice for a total of three layers. Over the remaining tortilla halves, spread the remaining enchilada sauce.
Over the top, sprinkle the remaining cheese.
Cover the dish with foil sprayed with cooking spray to avoid sticking.
Bake casserole for 30 minutes. Remove foil and bake for an additional 5 - 10 minutes or until the cheese is melted and browned.
Allow casserole to sit for 5 minutes to firm up, top with garnishes, and serve.
